OnePlus confirms the 8T will have a 120Hz display

You don’t have to turn to spec leaks to learn about the OnePlus 8T’s display before its October 14 debut. OnePlus has confirmed key details of the 8T’s screen, and it promises to be a meaningful upgrade even compared to the 8 Pro.

True to the rumors, the OnePlus 8T display will have a 120Hz refresh rate previously limited  to the high-end 8 Pro. It won’t necessarily represent a dramatic improvement over the 90Hz of the OnePlus 8, but it should still be a welcome upgrade if you value smooth scrolling on the web or social apps.

The 8T will also represent a first for any OnePlus phone: a 2.5D flexible screen. No, it’s not a foldable phone, but company chief Pete Lau told TechRadar that the 6.55-inch panel allows more light and a peak brightness of 1,100 nits — you shouldn’t be squinting to see content on a sunny day. It should have ever-so-slightly thinner bezels than earlier OnePlus phones, managing a 91.9% screen-to-body ratio versus ‘just’ 90.8% on the 8 Pro.

Color accuracy will still be a focus. OnePlus is touting 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space on the 8T’s display, with a Just Noticeable Color Difference 0f 0.3 and support for HDR10+ to boost the dynamic range of supporting content like videos.

OnePlus didn’t say more about the 8T beyond discussing its screen. If history is any indication, though, you can expect it to dribble out details in the weeks leading up to the launch. There may be a few. Rumors have suggested the 8T may get quad rear cameras and a slightly faster Snapdragon 865 Plus chip.

It’s not certain if there will be a Pro counterpart, although leakers have claimed the 8T will stand alone. It wouldn’t be a surprising move with these display specs, though. Simply speaking, you might not get much more out of an 8T Pro. A ‘basic’ OnePlus 8T will not only natch the Pro, but claim an edge in some areas.
