How to Track Someone’s Location on Google Maps with Share Real-Time Location

Google Maps offers a convenient feature called Share Real-Time Location, which allows you to track the whereabouts of friends and family in real time. This feature can be particularly useful for keeping tabs on loved ones, ensuring their safety, or coordinating meetups.

Prerequisites:

  • A Google account for both you and the person you want to track
  • The Google Maps app installed on both devices
  • An active internet connection on both devices

Steps to Track Someone’s Location with Share Real-Time Location:

  1. Open the Google Maps app on your device.

  2. Sign in to your Google account if you haven’t already.

  3. Tap on your profile picture or initial located in the top right corner of the screen.

  4. Select “Location sharing” from the menu that appears.

  5. Tap on “New share.”

  6. Choose how long you want to share the person’s location with you. Options include sharing for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until the person turns off sharing.

  7. Search for the person’s name or email address in the search bar.

  8. Tap on the person’s profile when it appears in the search results.

  9. Tap on “Share.”

  10. A notification will be sent to the person you want to track, prompting them to accept your location-sharing request.

  11. Once the person accepts your request, their location will appear on your Google Maps app in real time. You will be able to see their current location as they move around.

Additional Tips:

  • To refresh the person’s location, tap on their icon on the map and then tap on “Refresh.”

  • To stop sharing the person’s location, open the Google Maps app, tap on your profile picture or initial, select “Location sharing,” and then tap on the person’s name and then tap on “Remove.”

  • Keep in mind that Share Real-Time Location relies on the accuracy of GPS signals and internet connectivity. Location updates may not always be instantaneous or perfectly accurate.

  • Always respect the privacy of others and only use Share Real-Time Location with consent.
